Highlights from the Trade and Cargo Security Summit

CASAS International attended the Trade Cargo and Security Summit in Dallas, Texas earlier this month. The summit centered around the state of supply chain visibility, security, and trade enforcement.

Standards, accountability, and active engagement were central themes for both importers and brokers. CTPAT continues to play an important role in strengthening the trusted trader community, helping CBP focus enforcement resources on higher-risk participants while supporting a fair and competitive environment for compliant businesses.

Importers are also expected to take a more active role in managing compliance, including maintaining ACE participation and providing appropriate oversight of broker relationships. Compliance is a shared responsibility and cannot be fully delegated.

The broader message was clear: transparency, sound judgment, and adherence to established rules and regulations are essential as increased enforcement becomes the new normal.

FIVE ACTION ITEMS IMPORTERS AND BROKERS SHOULD TAKE NOW

  1. Elevate compliance to the executive level.
Trade compliance is no longer a back-office function. It should be treated as a strategic business priority tied to economic security, supply chain resilience, and risk management.
  2. Know your supply chain beyond Tier 1.
Improve visibility into suppliers, countries of origin, and component-level sourcing, with particular attention to transshipment, sanctions, and geopolitical risk.
  3. Use technology to strengthen oversight.
Leverage AI, data, and other tools to improve traceability, identify anomalies, and assess risk across the supply chain.
  4. Strengthen due diligence and documentation.
Regularly verify business partners, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance controls are strong enough to identify and address issues proactively.
  5. Prepare for faster, more coordinated enforcement.
CBP, DOJ, DHS, and HSI are signaling increased scrutiny of trade fraud and noncompliance. Companies should invest in compliance now, address errors quickly, and be prepared to defend their actions with strong data and oversight.
